This film cannot be properly assessed if one does not recall the “Moon Race” between the USSR and the USA. The film was shot in almost 5 months, and by May 1969. it has already been mounted. By this time, the lunar program managed to launch 4 ships (Apollo 7.8, 9.10). But the first landing on our satellite was scheduled only for June 16, 1969 (Apollo 11: Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins, remaining in orbit of the moon). Therefore, the premiere (November 10, 1969) took place against the background of the real triumph of the Americans. And it is quite understandable that on such an inspiring example of the nation, shown by John Sturges, could not find a patriotic response, and the film failed at the box office, “beat off” only $ 4 million out of 8 spent on its creation.
But the story does not end there, because exactly 5 months after the premiere on Apollo 13, an accident occurred, some aspects of which can be completely correlated with Martin Kaydin’s novel Marooned (1964) and the film Lost "(Another name -" Cut off from the world "). After the accident, 4 more times the Americans landed on the moon, however, the Apollo-18,19,20 declared for the flight did not start, although the entire material base for this was available. There is an opinion that the Sturges film played a significant role in this, forcing the NASA leadership to reconsider priorities.
In part, I can understand the discontent of some viewers: the film, by and large, is too informative, with a clear lack of entertainment, although Gregory Peck, Richard Crenna and Gene Hackman played their roles excellently. “Cut off from the world” deservedly won an Oscar in the nomination “Best Visual Effects”, however, in my opinion, it would be fairer to be rewarded for “Best Operator Performance” because making a film of such a level and quality where half of the action takes place inside banks ”is a real art.
Of course, the finale is an undoubted failure of the film, which can be characterized by a Russian proverb: "We started for health, and finished for the dead." Screw this after a flawless artistic and documentary component! .. When I first watched, I thought that the final shots are an excerpt from another film - it looks painfully alien after almost two hours of timekeeping ...
