This film has a very long prelude, looking like an ordinary Italian comedy with a characteristic dynamic plot and the absurdity of what is happening. I read the annotation to the film and when I started watching, I already began to doubt, but am I watching that? The scenes with a racist slant were painfully amusing, so I was convinced that the tragedy would not be here anymore. But everything changed dramatically when the hero and his son were taken to a concentration camp. Here, the creators of the picture were able to thoroughly show the horrors of that time, especially when rumors about gas chambers reached the mother and she stared at her with despairing eyes.
Half of the picture rests on the peculiarities of Guido's mindset - the main character. This person is not afraid of anything, never becomes discouraged, finds a way out of any situation, and there is nothing impossible for him in the world that he constantly demonstrates to us. The greatest product of his mind was the illusion that he managed to convince his son that life in a concentration camp is just a game, and to maintain it until the capitulation of Italy. To do this, the hero had to squeeze the most out of all his skills, and the desired result was achieved. He went through murderous working conditions, cruelty and injustice, but never for a moment gave up the slack, again and again finding the strength to support his son and protect him from the terrible truth. Few people can do that. I do believe that no one, but I believe that this is possible. Yes, even if not, but this is a movie! We should not repeat the heroic deeds, but we can always learn something from ourselves. For example, this movie will help us understand the importance of the ability to support our loved ones in difficult times. The hero did it so well that his son did not notice a difficult hour at all.
In general, I have to admit that there is more comedic in the film. And I want to think, not because the creators did not perfectly succeed in crossing genres, but because of Guido’s charisma, he was so sophisticated! Especially funny was the scene where he "translated" from the German rules of behavior in a concentration camp ...
The film is excellent, but I can not say that it sunk into my heart. I do not know why, maybe just the Italian style of shooting is not for me, but maybe it lacks the showiness typical of modern films, because I grew up with them.
P.S. I thought that the "prize" would be an American tank. I wondered which one. :)
