I doubted that Fitzgerald could be screened in principle, let alone do it well. After all, his works are not very plot, sluggish, without any special action. They are atmospheric, lazy, unhurried, under the necks of bohemian indifference and rivers of alcohol.
How to create a picture that can interest the viewer, if the original is a stream? Voiceover quote the author's thoughts? Yes exactly. The main character did not "talk to the mirror." He told the story to the psychoanalyst, then to the paper, and then to the typewriter. Everything was organic, and even despite the cinema and the neighboring popcorn, some thoughts among this chic and brilliance focused attention on themselves (from what is best for a girl in this world to be a pretty fool, and ending with how frivolous people are not thinking, breaking other people's lives).
The film perfectly complements my erased memories of the novel. If the original seemed distant from the masterpiece and caused some confusion, for which he was so praised (read almost ten years ago, now, perhaps, the impression could be different), then the movie filled gaps in understanding the psychology of the characters. If earlier I didn’t understand what was so great about this Gatsby, now, however, the sensation of his strength still overtook. Daisy still wanted to kill, but not so painfully. Women, weak creatures, what to take from them? Strong-willed men often fall in love with those.
And now - on a hot head after a session - I can say that Gatsby himself struck me as a hero. Build your own small empire at the expense of the power of your own imagination and fantasies about a bright future? Perhaps every woman would like for her to build castles and reach the top. Everyone wants to be that guiding green light of hope that helps and inspires a man to achieve and succeed.
And you catch yourself thinking that Fitzgerald really wrote all his novels in the name of his schizophrenic wife Zelda, creating her book prototypes, then in “Tender Is Nasty”, then, in Daisy from “The Great Gatsby”, which so hysterically reacts to so important for Gatsby moment.
I note the work of di Caprio. He is real. As much as I did not like him in the nineties-zero, I was so impressed with his works in the “tenths”. Prejudices are overcome. Hurray, for example.
From the minuses I will highlight the soundtrack. Once in my perception of reality, Charleston and hip-hop are never combined at all. Cognitive dissonance happened. Separately, I may listen to these songs, but not in this situation. They would have added to the Middle Ages dubstep. Jazz, give me jazz.
Two and a half hours, after which a trace of 3D-glasses remains on the nose. And after the end of the session - applause. A good movie. Also beautiful. But I definitely would have shot the parties a little differently.
