The film "The Kid" is the first full-fledged work of the world famous Charles. I call him the Man-smile, and his films - the dawn of cinematography, his birth and gaining true significance in the age of cultures. Fervent Chaplin is not only an amusing character in ragged clothes that gets into ridiculous situations and makes spectators laugh at their antics, Chaplin is a satire on the social life of the 20th century, on the 21st century society, on a society that, however it has been perfected and not complicated technically, still remains alone with age-old problems. These are the problems of inequality, loneliness, love, misunderstanding, friendship, betrayal. All this will exist in any society. And, undoubtedly, the talented Chaplin presents these "eternal themes" in his tapes quite sincerely and that is very important - in a positive way!
Strikingly, in fact, the tape was shot in 1921, it turned out a black and white picture, without sound, with a minimum of words in the credits, but the feelings when viewing appear inexplicably naturally, and this proves that the birth of real art did not have to be unnecessary. Talent in its pure form. Diamond without cut.
The plot of the film is simple. The mother, abandoned by her "friend", from despair, despair, and, in the end, from disorderlyness and, apparently, not quite clear awareness of what is happening, leaves the child born in a car standing at a rich estate. In the diaper the mother leaves a note: "Love and take care of the orphan." It's funny. The problem of fear of responsibility is one.
The child will not be in one pair of frightened hands, while accidentally does not please the restless ragamuff Charles. Of course, the poor fellow is not happy with the uninvited guest, but what can you do? Reading the note, his heart contracts. Here it is compassion - it's two. The person-smile is engaged in education of the "foundling", takes care of him, father's love in pure form - three. And how many comical and tragicomic situations this couple got, but how desperately they defended each other from the rest of society! Devotion and responsibility are four. The film has absorbed all the best feelings, it is pointless to list them. You just need to look once.
And the blond, disheveled kid, whose role belongs to Jackie Coogan, really leaves only the emotion and some irresistible desire to burst into tears when he kisses his only beloved Chaplin, at a time when they want to be separated.
The only negative, in my opinion, is the protracted dream of Chaplin with a very strange story. However, it is senseless to evaluate films of incipient cinema, let alone a talented Human smile. So just thanks: for the mood, for the atmosphere, for the feeling of love.
