So Tom Hooper was again honored to take a biopic about one of the members of the Windsor royal dynasty, namely Albert Frederick Arthur George, better known among the masses as George VI. This, to a greater extent, television director, at one time, had already managed to distinguish himself (of course only for the better) with successful historical mini-series about such significant personalities as John Adams and Elizabeth I, therefore, we can safely say that biographical films are this is his horse. Still, "The King Says" is kept apart from them and can, to date, be deservedly considered the best film in Tom Hooper's filmography. But it is not necessary to rank the success of the picture only to his merits, because Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush, it seems to me, have invested much more energy into it.
Anyone who hopes to see the full biography of the king, can not even count on it. The film covers only a certain period of his life - the ascent to the throne, which, oddly enough, turns out to be a real test for him. Here are just the main obstacle that has become on the way to the coronation of George, he himself. Usually, when a film is made about a monarch, the emphasis is primarily on his development, relations with his family, as well as his domestic and foreign policy. The script, which fell into the hands of Hooper, does not sink under the weight of generally accepted standards. I will say even more: it is original. Nobody had the idea to focus on the king’s illness, and not on his personal life. Not many people know that George VI suffered a severe stutter, which could well have deprived him of the crown.
How can a king lead a people, if he cannot connect a few words? Would his intermittent speech be so convincing that people believed her unconditionally? Such a person will never be able to rule his country, because his public speeches would obviously only cause only ridicule, so George simply could not allow his illness to prevail over him. The most difficult thing is to challenge yourself, but the future king of England, realizing that the responsibility for the further prosperity of the state fell on his shoulders, he decided to overcome his flaw in order to become something. At the same time, due to his weak character and quick temper, he cannot do without the help of his wife, who does not allow him to fall into despair and given the opportunity to find a true friend, without which the path to recovery would be impossible.
The main storyline develops rather slowly, since the director does not focus on historical events that took place in Great Britain when the first prerequisites for the start of World War II appeared, but only on the heir to the throne and his healer Lionel Logue. This allows him not only to fully reveal the characters of both, but also to force the viewer to feel the sympathy for the main characters. This effect Tom Hooper naturally achieves with the help of “perfected” to the smallest details of the dialogues, which for almost two hours, though a little tiring, still listen with genuine interest. This is especially true of conversations between Georg and Leonel, where there was a place not only for reasoning about serious things, but also for the inimitable English humor.
Colin Firth’s game made a huge impression on me. This is the brightest role in his career, for which he is simply doomed to get an Oscar. Not every actor has the power to be so organic in his image, so that the viewer does not have a single doubt that they face a real historical person, and not just a person trying to become one. It’s even hard for me to imagine how film distributors are going to duplicate Firth, after all, it’s unlikely that anyone will be able to portray stuttering in such a way. Geoffrey Rush, as always, on top. Who would doubt that? Being funny and, at the same time, serious, he is not the first time. Helena Bonham Carter was not surprised this time. It is difficult to find any flaws in her game, but there’s really nothing to be praised for.
England does not forget its heroes and perpetuates their memory in such biographical, but at the same time artistic films, which are not yet affected by the harmful influence of Hollywood. Who is next up next to Hooper? Surely Prince Charles?
