The theory of the six handshakes states that every person on our wonderful planet is separated from every other by only five levels of mutual acquaintance on average. The creators of the unforgettable "Matrix", once brothers, and now brother and sister Wachowski, and with them the director of "Perfume" Tom Tykwer developed this theme not only in terms of space, but also in time. For the basis of their joint film "Cloud Atlas" they took the novel of the same name by David Mitchell, in which the theme of the immortality of the soul, reincarnation and the fate of one person was raised against the background of countless similar destinies scattered over the time layer of history.

"Cloud Atlas" is six short stories intertwined with each other, somewhere more, somewhere quite insignificantly. An American lawyer returns home from a long voyage, in which he contracted a terrible disease, and shelters a fugitive negro in his cabin. A young, gay Englishman becomes the secretary of one of the most famous composers of his time and secretly writes his masterpiece, on the authorship of which his mentor is ready to encroach. The ambitious journalist is trying to expose the corrupt nuclear businessmen, thereby bringing on herself danger. An elderly publisher, hiding from the bandits, with the light hand of his wealthy brother, is locked in a nursing home. The clone girl challenges the system of the future and turns out to be the last hope of the resistance fighting for freedom. And finally, the story of a post-apocalyptic Earth, in which society was divided into the inhabitants of the Valley, who returned to the primitive communal order, and the technologically advanced Seers; at the same time, they both depend on each other.

The stories, at first glance, are completely unrelated, but gradually the "trickle-down effect" becomes more and more noticeable. Each character had its own influence on others, somewhere completely mediated, and somewhere - the most that neither is direct. Wachowski and Tykwer tried to show us that accidents do not exist, that all the most important meetings in our life are predetermined, and if they are not destined to take place in this life, it will definitely happen in the next.

Novels are very different - in spirit and mood. But the topic of predestination, to one degree or another, is raised in each of them. It is noteworthy that they do not follow one after the other, but now and then alternate, transferring the viewer to one or another era. So, a barely noticeable ghostly connection becomes more distinct, and when the plot tangle weaves together more tightly than ever, sharply raising the degree of tension in two or even three short stories at the same time, you worry about the heroes more than ever. After all, by the end of the definitely rather big story, they become almost like relatives. A variety of eras, from historical, everyday for us and to absolutely fantastic, interesting characters, beautiful literary language, which for the most part the heroes use - all this creates a feeling of “literary”. More than once or twice, when viewing "Cloud Atlas", one gets the feeling that you are sitting and reading a very good book by an intelligent author with a well-developed imagination.

The cast also helps to "get in touch" with what is happening on the screen. Indeed, in each novel, the characters are the next incarnations of the same people. Only often they are completely impossible to identify on their own. In accordance with the era and the mood that unfolds in the next story, the hero also takes on a suitable appearance. Sometimes bizarre to the point of absurdity. In my opinion, the most striking images came from Hugo Weaving, a faithful companion of the Wachowski directors. His roles are secondary, but will be remembered for a long time, precisely by the skill of reincarnation. But the rest of the actors deserve words of praise. I learned about the presence of many of them in the film only from the end credits. After all, make-up artists also contributed to the actor's metamorphosis. If Cloud Atlas does not receive an Oscar in this technical nomination, it will be a very big injustice.

Unfortunately, not everything worked out perfectly. The film runs for almost three hours, it turns out that about half an hour is allotted for each story. Some novels have not been able to fully unfold within their time limits. This is especially true of stories that unfold in the future. But the authors can also be understood - to increase the already considerable timekeeping would be too much, and to sacrifice some story in favor of the rest is blasphemy. But what was in the power of the creators of "Atlas" was to make that very connection a little more noticeable. Sometimes it is so subtle that it seems as if it does not exist at all. Perhaps, with repeated views, even more meanings will open, but I still wanted to see a greater relationship between the characters. Cloud Atlas has an idea. Even as many as six ideas. Each story is complete and self-sufficient. And together they create an overall picture, a kind of "transformer". Only the inconvenient question "why?" sometimes I still want to ask.

Cloud Atlas is not a masterpiece. Not a "second Matrix". But this is a very bold and unusual picture. Atlas is one of the most expensive independent filmov, and the courage of Wachowski and Tykwer, who took on such an ambiguous and expensive project, can only be envied. Now that the viewer is pampered by endless blockbusters, and the average static cinema goers go to something more serious and intelligent, except for the sake of variety, Atlas definitely faces some risk of box office failure. And despite the fact that the Wachowskis claim that they are primarily for art, and not for money, I would still advise you to pay attention to the "Cloud Atlas". This is a fascinating story that will take you a whole evening to watch, and then you will ponder what you saw for a few more evenings. As one of the heroes of the film said: "What is the ocean if not a multitude of droplets?"

Cinema on the topic of the day. Incredibly relevant in our technocratic-developing society. Relevant in that it reminds us of what is important, what is the essence, and everything else is secondary. People forget about it so often. And "Cloud Atlas" makes you turn around and look ahead. What awaits us there? And why did people stop worrying about such important questions of being and the very human essence? Why did they get lost somewhere between constant business meetings, countless calculations of finances and incessant pursuit of profit? Spirituality has not yet left this world. And this film is a vivid and vivid reminder of that.

I hate to say platitudes, but Cloud Atlas is an incredibly daring project. He is bold financially, because it is extremely risky to shoot such expensive films without studio support. There is no guarantee that the film will pay off. However, they never happen. But "Cloud Atlas" is an innovation in a different area. In the sphere of thought, reason, idea. Although, in essence, this is not innovation. For us, cave people, who are just crawling out into the light of day and daring to realize that we are a grain of sand in the vast ocean of the Cosmos, this is an innovation, for those who know more than us it is rather an obvious truth. Life, death, birth, future, past, present - everything is interconnected. We are all interconnected. And this is what this tape is all about, from beginning to end.

"Cloud Atlas" is not one of those films that are fully realized and understood in one viewing. This is a thoughtful, multi-level and multidimensional movie that reveals something new over and over again. I am convinced of this, even though I have only seen the film once. After all, this tape is so deep that all its essence cannot be covered at once, you can only do a cursory scan, bring out the main ideas, but most of the side, but no less important ideas will be left out. The film, consisting of six short stories, closely interconnected with each other, is something hitherto unseen in world cinema. Who knows, maybe such a movie is the future. Personally, I would like to hope so.

The narrative, built in an unusual style, shuffles the cards in front of the viewer, gradually building the overall picture, the canvas. Despite the fact that the film was filmed by three directors, the tape does not lose its integrity. It looks complete and complete inside and out. Actually, you can't expect anything else from the creators of "The Matrix" and the director of "Perfumer". But no matter how good and interesting Cloud Atlas is for its structure, any film as art defines its essence. And, perhaps, this is the best, most interesting and complex thing in this tape.

The emphasis is on two themes: love and freedom. Love - in the broadest sense of the meaning of this word. Love as the personification of all the best that is in a person. Love is like faith, love is like hope. Love is stronger than death, no matter how pretentious it sounds. This feeling gives you all-powerful power. It saves and heals, it heals and opens a second wind. It ties all the characters in each story together. And even if in one story this love is sacrificed in the name of freedom, in another it takes on flesh and blood. Not in this life, so in the next you will be rewarded according to your merit. Someone will return to their home after a long journey and hug their wife, and someone received a big wrench on the head. It all depends on the choice we made earlier. Actions, words and thoughts determine everything, the whole course of events, the course of life. Don't forget about it. Everything is interconnected, and we have the right to determine what this connection will be.

Freedom is a sweet word. This film is a hymn to the erasure of boundaries and conventions that have entangled people. The material world is in chains, it is subject to conventions. We voluntarily live in cages and handcuffs and are stubbornly afraid to stick our heads out of the sand. Society sets frames, boundaries, drives them into clear geometric forms, from which one cannot escape. Undoubtedly, without these frameworks there will be chaos, but each person has the right to erase his own boundaries, which he sets for himself, to be above prejudices, to see wider. For example, to understand that black slaves are people too, that it doesn't matter what a person's skin color is, it is only important that this person is. Society is a kingdom of conventions. And this film breaks down all imaginary boundaries. So bold, so bold.

It should be said about the actors and the incredible picture. All actors just need to bow at their feet. To create a lot of such bright and distinctive images is the highest aerobatics of an acting master. Such a different Tom Hanks, colorful Halle Berry, original Hugo Weaving, thin Ben Whishaw, inimitable Jim Broadbent, unrecognizable Hugh Grant, interesting Jim Sturgess, Bae Duna with incredibly large and soulful eyes and many others. Sometimes it is simply impossible to recognize the actors. They are changed not only by makeup, but also by their presentation and vision of each character. Although makeup - there are simply no words. This is a must see.

The picture of the film makes one forget that "Cloud Atlas" is a non-studio project. Such a scale, such a grandeur. Impressive. The scope of this film is felt, from the views of a sailing ship under white sails and beyondending with two options for the world of the future: Neo-Seoul and the world after a nuclear war with tribes of cannibals and the spirit of Old Georgie, who is revered for the devil. Very beautiful, very impressive. In my opinion, not all studio films are able to boast of such filming. Often, having on hand a fertile material, the output turns out to be mediocrity in everything. But this is definitely not about the "Cloud Atlas".

"Cloud Atlas" is a project that you can talk about endlessly, look at it from different points of view, turn like a globe in all directions, looking for new and new ideas, points of contact, creating an increasingly clear and clear picture of what is happening, seeing distinct allusions to the past and present. In my opinion, this is what characterizes any film as high-quality and worth watching. But "Cloud Atlas" is an unusual, non-standard picture and falls out of the usual framework of understanding. She looks wider. And before you go to the session, ask yourself if you are ready for what you see.

Rebirth of the soul. "But what is any ocean but a multitude of drops?"

It is almost impossible to talk about "Cloud Atlas" with those who have not watched it, and you can talk endlessly with those who have watched it. And the whole point, probably, is that this film is a work that goes beyond the usual ideas about cinema for us. "Cloud Atlas" is one of those rare films that can reach the heart, touch every bare nerve. It's about faith and hope. About the great power of love. That one desire can change the world. This is a beautiful story, and it is about each of us.

I especially respect films based on a certain philosophical concept of being. When a director or screenwriter gives free rein to his imagination on a philosophical theme, you get a small story the size of the universe, in the space of which you hang for a long time after watching. "Cloud Atlas" is a bit of a philosophical concept in itself. There is no such atlas of cloud maps in nature, because the shape of the clouds is what our imagination draws. Cloud Atlas is just a world of dreams, realities. And only the end of the film makes it possible to fully understand what this phrase means. "Cloud Atlas" may be just clouds flying across the sky or a mysterious melody that you know from somewhere, but in any case it is something incredible and amazing.

'Cloud Atlas' turned out to be a film with a very graceful structure, whose viewing is like climbing a steep staircase, where the ascent is not easy and there is an obstacle on each step, but at the highest step you can see an amazing picture that amazes the imagination with its scope and strength. And if we are used to the fact that the main character of a film or book is one person, then in this case we will have to reconsider the stereotypes of perception, because the main characters here will be much more than expected. In fact, six stories represent such a ladder. And each of these stories ends at the moment when you least expect it, then when you have already managed to fall in love with the hero, to be imbued with him, to some extent to get to know him and understand him. And here is a sharp transition, and before you is a completely new hero. There is an aftertaste, innuendo, excitement, intrigue, a desire to find out what will happen next. You start watching one story, and suddenly it is interrupted in order to give rise to the next. And it is precisely this distribution of stories that causes not only dissatisfaction, but a misunderstanding of what is happening on the screen. Of course, the whole point of this three-hour story lies at the end. And then it is unlikely that from the first viewing the viewer will be able to fully discern the whole essence of this narration, imbued with it, find answers to all the questions asked and put together like a mosaic of six storylines and get a picture of incredible power and beauty.

The film provides six separate stories that, at first glance, are completely unrelated, as if you were watching several films at once. The plot of the "Cloud Atlas", rising from step to step, shows us different epochs of human development. The first story is told on behalf of the American lawyer Adam Ewing, whose eyes at the beginning of the film we see the settlement of Australia (mid-19th century). The second story is told through the letters of the young and talented composer Robert Frobisher (30s of the 20th century). The third from journalist Louise Rey, who is investigating the construction of a nuclear power plant (70s of the 20th century). The fourth, most ridiculous and funny story, from an elderly publisher Timothy Cavendish, who his own brother decided to make fun of (today). The fifth story is told to us through an interview with the clone Sunmi - 451 (future). The sixth, the very last, is conducted in the distant future from the goat herder Zakri, when all civilizations that exist in the world have already fallen. Each of these stories is presented in a distinctive style and each has its own presentation.

These six stories are six scraps of different colors, but from the same material. They are sewn together with a strong thread and tightened with an incredibly tight knot of interconnections that almost never come to the surface. They are completely different, completely different from each other, but connected in a mystical, incomprehensible and spiritual way and this connection never appears to the viewer openly, only imperceptible echoes and small details, but it is much deeper than it might seem at first glance. The atmosphere of each era is very vivid and convincing. During these six stories, the viewer has the opportunity to travel from the past to the present, from the present to the future and vice versa.

The main charm of the plot is how the key moments in the development of the life scenario of different people coincide, how they have an incessant repetition of mental throwing and finding truths. The main concept of the film implies that the soul has no choice: it will live the same thing over and over again, returning in different guises. And no matter how full of suffering and torment her life is, one should perceive ethen for granted and irreversible.

The first line of the film is, first of all, the line of love. It seems that it is imperceptible, but it is thanks to it that the cycle becomes complete and a new rebirth is possible. This can be clearly seen in the story of Sunmi's heroine. If she didn’t love, she would not have created a more changed world, where feelings of friendship and love are higher than prejudices and beliefs. The second line stems from a person's desire to change and adjust the world for himself, which can be discerned to one degree or another in each of the six stories. This is why the cycle repeats over and over again. From tribes that are not familiar with civilization, but already know what slavery is, to the stage where everything will perish and become chaos.

"Cloud Atlas" is a superbly filmed, brilliant work with deep semantic overtones, with an original stratification of times and plots. Amazing movie. If at first it is a little boring and intricate, then then it develops into something more than a movie. "Cloud Atlas" is unique in its structure and purpose, which it carries. This film, in fact, being a genre, plot, stylistic, historical and philosophical-conceptual mosaic, tells about such a myriad of things and draws so many story lines, beyond the bounds presented on the surface, that not every experienced viewer will immediately find the right key and answer to what is happening on the screen. And again, it is not a fact that this necessary key will actually be necessary.

The story of an immortal soul ...

Going to the cinema, I did not expect that after watching the film I would say something like that. But apparently at this stage of my life - this is the best movie that I watched in the cinema. It is completely unrealistic to put together all the thoughts about the film, but it is definitely a magnificent and enchanting sight. I don’t remember anything like that, perhaps after a while my admiration will subside, but I’ll say for sure - what I feel at the moment is worth it.

So what's all the magic? Not otherwise than in history itself. The theme of reincarnation of souls has always interested me and inspired me, gave me some hope that no emptiness would follow afterwards. And for me personally, to see such a film is a great gift. This is a film from the category of those in which you need to carefully follow the action, because in one moment we see a story about a musician, and the next moment there is a story about a girl from the future, and then a story about a journalist. Six stories from different times, such different destinies, but at the same time one and the same soul. Six stories that are incredibly different, but all united by a strong spirit of freedom, and tied together more tightly than meets the eye. And an irresistible desire to tell all about them, they all liked me, just some less, so in the order of my preferences:

Story # 1. Taking a long time to choose, the story of Sunmi-451 made the greatest impression on me. It is even difficult to say that it is bad, there are absolutely no flaws in it. The incredibly frightening inhumanity of the "purebreds" makes one think about the fact that the vices of humanity are progressing more and more over time, and this instills deep disgust. And the obsequious life of "fabricated goods" is a return to what the world got rid of not so long ago - back to slavery, but in its more frightening form. And Sunmi's fearless actions make me admire this character.

Story No. 2. This is an unimaginably beautiful story of composer Robert Frobisher. This is a story about sacrifice and incredible dedication to your work - to music so strong that it is not a pity to give everything you have for it. And, of course, a story of great love, whatever it was, but these were the most real feelings. And the "Cloud Atlas" sextet is really a wonderful melody, and it is saturated not only with the emotions of this story, it is she who personifies the mood of the whole film - the spirit of freedom, passion and incredible tragedy.

Story # 3. "The Pacific Diary of Adam Ewing." This is a story of true friendship and betrayal. An unthinkable friendship for those years, between a man from high society and a black slave, and the imaginary friendship of people of the same position in society. But as it seems, the position in society is not yet an indicator of a person's moral foundations. Sometimes, a person who is at the lower level of society is an infinitely loyal, loyal, honest, frank and selfless, in contrast to an individual who is several steps higher. And this phenomenon is not so rare.

Story No. 4. Story "Ferry near Listen". I have a lot of questions and misunderstandings about this story, but all this pales in comparison with the tragedy of the whole story. This is the world after a nuclear war, this is what humanity has led itself to - from the civilized world it pushed itself back, thousands of years ago. To lose everything because of their own selfishness, greed and anger, to destroy everything that has been built over the centuries. During each scene from this story, I could only think about this. I was not so much interested in the hero himself, in his actions, in the choice of path, as in my annoying thoughts about the world in which he lives.

Story No. 5. Timothy Cavendish's Last Judgment differs from other stories, because previous stories are united by the same soul, and this story is not about her. But despite this, she has a big impact on the lives of several people in the future. It is here that you can see a huge desire for freedom, and regardless of how old you are, freedom is what gives us the strength to live and strive for something.

Story # 6. Story about journalist Louise Rey. For some reason, it was this story that I liked least of all, and everything seems to be good and interesting in it: both a passionate desire to get to the bottom of the truth, and the girl's bold actions, and belief in her own righteousness. I can't even say for sure what exactly confuses me. But here it is not hooked, and there is nothing to be done, there are disappointments in life. Most likely, the fact is that the plot itself is no longer new, we have seen similar stories more than once in other films, and did not bring anything new to this story.

And just amazing acting! Play several characters, and all with different characters, different looks. In this film, a huge number of endlessly talented actors who embellish the film even more. While the make-up has to be given its due, it is definitely something incredible! Constantly admire myself: "God, is that Halle Berry now?", "It can't be, but I think it's Hugh Grant as an aboriginal!" or "Is it really Hugo Uwing as the villain again ?!" And after the credits to seethat so many I did not recognize or noticed, all this is a mixture of genuine surprise and admiration for makeup and acting.

The entire film is an incredibly beautiful, absolutely enchanting and magical sight. This is not just a beautiful picture, it is a thing with meaning, with deep and perfect. And the whole film sounds this soul-tearing, delightful, magnificent music! There is no doubt that I am in love with this film for the rest of my life.

Foreword. There is an opinion that two types of people (“read” and “did not read” the source book) evaluate differently the products of the cinema, filmed on the basis of lithography. I will say right away that I have not read the book by David Mitchell 8 years ago - now, by the way, there is such an idea. Next, let's proceed to the review.

6 stories. 6 epochs from the middle of the 19th century to a future battered by a global catastrophe. Many characters with their own destinies and aspirations. Lawyer Ewing, during a sea voyage, rescues an escaped slave and enters into battle with a strange illness. A young composer Robert with an unconventional orientation, ardently giving himself up to creativity and embarking on the path of conflict with the old meter, who appropriated the full authorship of their joint work by the "Cloud Atlas" sextet. The brave journalist Louise embarked on a dangerous investigation. An elderly publisher Timothy, on the run from criminal intrigues, into a high-security nursing home. The clone girl Sunmi, unexpectedly found herself at the forefront of the revolutionary movement in a world where all people are divided into two unequal classes. And, finally, the savage Zahri from the post-apocalyptic "day after tomorrow", who took into his house a woman from a more developed civilization, who came to his land with a mysterious mission. And the main thing that unites all these characters is that they are, in fact, the same people. Reincarnations of the same souls.

It is worth noting that I do not at all share the philosophy proposed in the "Cloud Atlas", but it cannot be said that this concept helped to create an extremely curious, diverse and large-scale film. In the offered menu, as you understand, there is a GREAT variety. We are shown alternately a fantastic action movie, a detective thriller, or a drama with a touch of the notorious Brokeback Mountain. At the same time, our interesting vinaigrette looks quite organic, but, on the other hand, raises certain claims to all local non-standardness. The story is presented in short episodes from different storylines ranging in size from about ten seconds to 5 minutes, which is not particularly easy for perception (even if the “episodes” do not have intricacies, for example, “Anonymous” - but there are 6 of them!). Although I looked quite carefully and made short notes (as far as possible in the dark), I had quite a lot of plot questions, and now it is impossible to say for sure whether I missed this or that remark, or whether unnecessary explanations simply did not fit into the already titanic timing. The approach is, in general, interesting, but not everyone may like it.

The ideological component of the "Cloud Atlas" is extensive and occupies a dominant place in the picture. Sometimes it may seem that too much is being said aloud. The film can simply be ripped apart into a bunch of philosophical quotes, since they speak on deep topics quite a lot, and they are not afraid to reinforce them with plot events. The main theme of the picture is being itself. Man is defined as "not the master of his life, because his existence is closely intertwined with the past and future, in which the immortal soul lived and will live." In the context of the universe, everything is connected, the film says. For evil comes evil, for good you get the same. He helped a black man to find the longed-for freedom - he received a hundredfold from him. Thus, it turns out that the nature of our existence is associated with our actions that go into eternity. At the same time, it cannot be said that an individual person is insignificant, a grain of sand in the face of Eternity, because, as one of the heroes says: "What is the ocean if not many drops?" Having proclaimed all this interconnectedness and the great power of life itself, "Cloud Atlas" towards the end will reveal another of its secrets: "Any boundaries are conditional." Another most striking theme of the film was the theme of freedom. The heroes will defend their interests and fight for their own rights; they will also remember our late A.I.Solzhenitsyn, who is known and banned for his ideological component even in futuristic neon Korea. What else to say to this? “Freedom is often just a motto. You only really understand it when you lose it. " In "Atlas" you can find many other food for the mind - the picture is rich for her. I have identified the main "motives".

Having dealt with the content, let's move on to the setting. The film has no special problems with entertainment - Atlas looks quite easy, although the brain often has to be strained. You will never get bored: exploring a kaleidoscope of situations and worlds, plus excellent acting does their job in the drama. High-quality special effects and staging brighten up the action moments. The picture, whether it be the entourage of neon skyscrapers or mysterious jungle, looks great. Being a film with an eye for deep content, Atlas can lure even popcorn movie lovers, even if it is, of course, a movie for a different audience. In the picture, humor is not so often, but aptly. For this component - a plus. About music, you can say something like this: successful, atmospheric, beautiful.

The acting component, which has already been praised above, is also interesting because the same peopleBeatable actors go through new and new visual reincarnations, playing such different, but so similar characters. That there is one Hugo Weaving, who acts as a "local agent Smith" Bill Smoke, then in the role of the infernal and mysterious creature Georgie, and even as a mischievous aunt Sister Knox from the nursing home.

The age rating and "adulthood" were treated quite logically. The film was shot adult and serious. Therefore, there is both blood and sex, but, so to speak, "without fanaticism."

Circle of life

I have not seen such an unusual film for a long time. A film that would last almost three hours without losing interest in it. 'Cloud Atlas' is an absolutely unusual movie that makes you fall out of our time and plunge into the vicissitudes of the destinies of several souls walking in circles from century to century.

Six stories, united by a single canvas, which, however, does not become clear at once, appear before us, posing many questions of life.

The story of Adam Ewing.

In any other form, such a story would not have attracted my attention, but here these relations were presented surprisingly aesthetically and touchingly, making me think about the souls of the heroes, and not about their belonging to a particular gender or social stratum. Before us unfolds a historical drama, where again there is a place of envy and greed.

Ben Whishaw looked very organic as a young rake with a tarnished reputation. You sincerely sympathize with his hero, not paying attention to any conventions.

This part is perhaps the most powerful of all. In its genre, Sunmi's story is a love dystopia. Here we are shown the world of the future, the world of consumer society, which, however, will soon be destroyed anyway. The story of Sunmi and Hye Joo Chen is the story of the struggle for freedom and equality, the struggle for love and the opportunity to live in a world without convention. This story, although unlike the previous ones, demonstrates love in all its power, is still the most cruel. Not because of the blood, but because of the fear that infiltrates the soul.
